GOD in TRINITY

There is what is called the 'Godhead' (Col. 2:9), meaning there is Divinity. Within that body of divinity there is divine Being and three divine Persons, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. These three are equally divine, the same in substance, equal in power, and equally worthy of divine glory. The doctrine of the Trinity is the single distinctive mark of the Christian religion. It sets Christianity apart from all the other religions of the world. This doctrine is foundational to the Christian faith and to Christian living. And, although it is not clearly and perfectly understood by men, it is clearly revealed in Holy Scripture. There is nothing in fallen nature that can fully receive or properly comprehend this doctrine. There must be an intervention of the Holy Spirit that leads a person into acceptance of the truth of the doctrine, based on faith in the integrity of Scripture.

Trinity is a word indicating tri-unity or three unified. Although the word Trinity does not appear in Scripture, the essence of the doctrine is revealed in both the Old and New Testaments. In the Old Testament, God’s tri-unity is alluded to (Gen. 1:1-2) rather than explicitly revealed. This is due, in part, to the preparatory nature of Old Testament revelation. The New Testament speaks both of the eternal divine equality between the Father, Son, and Spirit and of the functional subordination of the Son to the Father in the work of redemption that He performed as the incarnate God-man. As to the being and attributes of God, the Son is absolutely equal to the Father (John 1:1, 8:58 - I AM, Col. 1:1519). As to the Holy Spirit the divine identity is plainly stated (Acts 5:3-4).
